About Katelyn

Katelyn Patterson is a primary school teacher, instructional coach and advocate for STEAM education in the United States. She was drawn to working with children and the arts at a very young age. Katelyn holds degrees in Elementary Education, Counseling and Psychology. She sought out certification in STEAM education as a way to increase student engagement in the classroom and make learning relevant. Katelyn’s philosophy of teaching encourages students to view, research and plan their learning through the lens of STEAM. She loves inspiring children to take risks, be active participants in their learning and advocate for themselves! In 2010, Katelyn was recruited to work at the first STEAM elementary school in the world, teaching second and third grade while developing curriculum. In 2014, Katelyn moved to Los Angeles and joined the team at MUSE School CA. In 2020, Katelyn stepped out of the classroom as a core teacher to indulge in full-time STEAM education and advocacy at Village School.

Teacher Testimonials: Creating A Student-Centred, Passion-filled Classroom

Passion, love, sustainability, personal. These words aren’t usually ascribed to education, but at MUSE School in California they’re a part of every school day. HundrED spoke to Katelyn and her colleague, Randi Kearney, about what it’s like at one of the most innovative schools in the world and how teachers can adapt similar practices in their classrooms.

How to Teach and Assess Student Self-Efficacy

Self-efficacy is defined as the belief that one is capable of being successful in performing a task or managing a situation using openness, resourcefulness, and persistence to achieve a specific outcome. As a quote often attributed to Henry Ford says, “Whether you think that you can or that you can’t, you are usually right.” A child with high self-efficacy believes they have the skills to help them steer through life and reach their goals, but even more importantly, self-efficacy is about learning how to persevere when one encounters failure or hardship. Read an article written by Katelyn and her colleagues, Randi Kearney and Tressa Wyner, for HundrED.

Overcoming a Math Challenge Using the Process Communication Model

Growing up, were you a “math person?” Did you enjoy a good algorithm to solve or computing a multi-step word problem? Students as early as kindergarten classify themselves as a “math person” or on the contrary, “not a math person.” Students place themselves into these categories for a variety of reasons: past math experiences, parental influence, mindset or personality type. This story reflects a successful intersection of the PBL and PCM methodologies in Katelyn's classroom.

Reaching and Teaching All Personalities Within the Classroom

“It is the teacher that makes the difference, not the classroom.”
It is the responsibility of each teacher to reach each student so that we can effectively teach each student. The Process Communication Model allows teachers to connect and motivate each student according to their personality, psychological needs, channels of communication, environmental preferences and interaction styles. Each of these elements allows us to see each student for who they are and effectively connect and motivate. These papers will highlight each teacher’s challenges and breakthroughs with students whose personalities are both similar and different to their own.
